Social Media in Times of Crisis

As we’ve mentioned in a previous post, Jean and I participated in the Eidos Institute symposium “Social Media in Times of Crisis” at the State Library of Queensland today – which turned out to be a great event that generated lots of new ideas and further possibilities for our research. Many thanks to all of you who came along, and especially to our fellow presenters, and the Eidos team for organising the event.

The whole symposium was recorded and will, I think, be made available soon on the Eidos Website; for now, here’s our own presentation, with audio:

  1. I would be interested to know if loss of power in the qld floods impacted on the tweeting population. I certainly know that I was hugely active on twitter till I lost power and then was isolated and could not power up for several days. Wonder if key twitter users tweeting in the first 24hrs ran out of juice…

  2. Hi Krissy,

difficult for us to tell for sure, but yes, I would expect that power outages affected tweeting. I know for sure that a few of the unofficial Brisbane river Webcams went down because of power outages, so similar things would have happened for a number of Twitter users.
