{"id":339,"date":"2010-11-19T15:13:41","date_gmt":"2010-11-19T05:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mappingonlinepublics.net\/dev\/2010\/11\/19\/some-updates-on-recent-developments\/"},"modified":"2012-04-10T13:51:09","modified_gmt":"2012-04-10T03:51:09","slug":"some-updates-on-recent-developments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mappingonlinepublics.net\/dev\/2010\/11\/19\/some-updates-on-recent-developments\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Updates on Recent Developments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Activity on this blog has slowed down a little since Jean and I have come back to Australia from our European adventures, as we work through a backlog of other more or less urgent tasks &#8211; but while we wait to get back to some hands-on work on the Mapping Online Publics project, I thought I&#8217;d provide a few updates on our past and upcoming activities:<\/p>\n<h3><em>Social Science Computer Review<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Our special issue of <em>Social Science Computer Review<\/em>, edited with Carol Soon and Han Woo Park, has now been published at least in its online version (with print to follow). Articles in the special issue are available <a href=\"http:\/\/ssc.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/recent\">on the journal site<\/a>, and in particular the collection includes our &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/ssc.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2010\/09\/16\/0894439310382507.full.pdf+html\">Mapping the Australian Networked Public Sphere<\/a>&#8221; (with Tim Highfield, Lars Kirchhoff, and Thomas Nicolai), as well as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/ssc.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2010\/09\/16\/0894439310382514.full.pdf+html\">Challenges of Tracking Topical Discussion Networks Online<\/a>&#8221; (by Tim Highfield, Lars Kirchhoff, and Thomas Nicolai) and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/ssc.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2010\/09\/16\/0894439310382511.full.pdf+html\">Mapping the Norwegian Blogosphere: Methodological Challenges in Internationalizing Internet Research<\/a>&#8221; (by Hallvard Moe), both of which are also immediately relevant to our work. All eight articles in the issue were drawn from two panels we organised for the International Communication Association conference in Singapore, in June.<\/p>\n<p> <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<h3>Communities &amp; Technologies Conference 2011 (Brisbane)<\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be running a workshop on our methodologies for <em>Twitter<\/em> research, as we&#8217;ve outlined them here, in the lead-up to the <a href=\"http:\/\/ct2011.urbaninformatics.net\/\">Communities &amp; Technologies<\/a> conference in Brisbane, Australia, on 29 June to 2 July 2011. Titled &#8220;Making Sense of Twitter: Quantitative Analysis Using Twapperkeeper and Other Tools&#8221;, our workshop will provide some hands-on training for getting started in <em>Twitter<\/em> research, as well as considering ethical and other implications of such research. We&#8217;re hoping for a good turnout, so please consider coming along! (And if you need to have a paper in the main conference in order to get travel funding to Brisbane, the call for papers closes on 10 Dec. 2010.)<\/p>\n<h3>European Consortium for Political Research Conference 2011 (Reykjavik)<\/h3>\n<p>With Asimina Michailidou from the University of Oslo, we&#8217;ve been successful in submitting a panel proposal to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecprnet.eu\/conferences\/general_conference\/Reykjavik\/\">ECPR conference<\/a>, which will take place in Iceland on 25-27 Aug. 2011. There may still be a couple of spots available for presenters on our panel &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecprnet.eu\/conferences\/general_conference\/reykjavik\/panel_details.asp?panelid=423\">Political Representation on Web 2.0: Concepts, Methods and Empirical Data<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; if you&#8217;ve got a relevant paper, submissions close on 1 Feb. 2011.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it for now &#8211; regular service on this blog will resume in a few weeks&#8217; time.
