{"id":1880,"date":"2012-11-07T09:00:43","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T23:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mappingonlinepublics.net\/?p=1880"},"modified":"2012-11-07T08:53:46","modified_gmt":"2012-11-06T22:53:46","slug":"more-work-on-twitter-and-crisis-communication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mappingonlinepublics.net\/dev\/2012\/11\/07\/more-work-on-twitter-and-crisis-communication\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter and Crisis Communication from #qldfloods to #sandy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My recent trip to a number of European conferences and other research events also provided an opportunity to present some of our ongoing work on the use of social media in crisis communication \u2013 as <a href=\"http:\/\/mappingonlinepublics.net\/2011\/11\/01\/new-arc-linkage-project-social-media-in-times-of-crisis\/\">our ARC Linkage project <\/a>with the Queensland Department of Community Safety and the Eidos Institute begins in earnest, this will continue to be a key area of research for us, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Before I get to this, though, to a bit of breaking news: Jean Burgess, Farida Vis and I have just published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/news\/datablog\/2012\/nov\/06\/fake-sandy-pictures-social-media\">a brief study on the use of images in the coverage of &#8216;superstorm&#8217; Sandy on<\/a> <em>Twitter<\/em>, as it hit the U.S. east coast. The article, with attendant data and image gallery, was published in <em>The Guardian<\/em>&#8216;s data blog\u00a0\u2013 our sincere thanks for Simon Rogers for making this possible. Much more analysis of #sandy data to come at a later point, surely.<\/p>\n<p>Back to some other crisis communication news: at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecrea2012istanbul.eu\/\">European Communication Conference (ECREA)<\/a>, I had an opportunity to outline the key findings from our work on the Queensland floods and Christchurch earthquakes, in a paper co-authored with my colleague Jean Burgess. This builds in part on <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/cci.edu.au\/floodsreport.pdf\" target=\"_self\">our major report on the use of <em>Twitter<\/em> during the 2011 south east Queensland floods<\/a>, which we released through the <a href=\"http:\/\/cci.edu.au\/\">ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation<\/a> in January 2012, as well as on related research work. There are some obvious overlaps between this talk and the AoIR presentation \u2013 but Helsinki gave me an opportunity to present our research in considerably greater detail.
